Most hotels in the world (especially outside Europe) use the same bed sizes and types:
• King size (200 x 200 cm)
• Queen size (150 x 200 cm)
• Full bed (140 x 200 cm)
• Twin bed (100 x 200 cm)
In Europe also sizes 90 x 200 and 80 x 200 cm.
Minimum size of a single bed according to the "European hotel classification" (hotelstars.eu), in the Czech Republic "Unified classification of hotels ", valid for all certified hotels in 11 European countries including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, is established on:
• 90 x 190 cm in the hotel categories *, ** and ***
• 90 x 200 cm in the hotels of 4 and 5 stars category (twice for a double bed).
It is very important to pay attention to the other criteria of the "Unified classification of hotels" and it is a mandatory criterion for all types of hotels (from one to five-star):
• "Good and well maintained mattress with a minimum thickness 13 cm" (in hotels with higher standards you will find mattresses 25-35 cm high and sometimes even higher).
Optional but highly evaluated according to the "Unified classification of hotels" are:
• "Mattress protector" (it is essential in order to maintain proper hygiene of hotel beds)
• 10% of beds with length min. 210 cm
Both of these criteria are considered in hotels with higher standards for granted but we recommend them also to other hotels - the customer will definitely appreciate it.
The most common type of hotel beds today are beds with a bed base called Spring box. The base is a wooden (or wooden with steel) upholstered frame filled up with springs. For easier manipulation the spring boxes are usually settled on two wheels (head board side) and four legs. The maximum size is most often from 120 x 200 to 120 x 220 cm, the hotel beds are usually composed of two boxes.
Most hotels usually use spring mattresses (due to their quality and durability), namely withbonnell springs or pocket springs. Bonnell mattresses are often complemented with a topper which ensures greater comfort of the mattress and minimizes the motion. In some hotels with lower standards you can find "foam mattresses", usually made of polyurethane (PUR). The quality of such hotel mattress is always very bad (especially when we talk about health).
